Gas is the second most common way Seattle heats its homes: Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 give utility gas 32.8% of occupied homes citywide, behind electricity at 61.1%, and about 41.9% in the ZIP code area that includes Gatewood, Fauntleroy and the south Seaview shore. A gas fireplace or insert draws on that same supply and asks for less attention than a wood fire, though not none. The 2021 Seattle Mechanical Code also keeps unvented gas log heaters out of any factory-built fireplace whose listing does not cover them, so we confirm that a log set and the firebox it sits in belong together. Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm near any gas fireplace.
