Thirty-five feet is the longest run allowed, and every 90-degree elbow costs 5 feet of it; the transition piece behind the dryer may be no longer than 8 feet. A vent that departs from that description collects lint faster.
Lint is fine, dry fiber, and it sits in a duct fed by a heating element or a gas burner. A blocked vent makes the dryer run hotter and longer, which is how dryer fires begin, and with a gas dryer the same blockage can push combustion gases, carbon monoxide among them, back indoors. A screen over the outlet, which the code forbids, is a frequent cause: it catches lint until the opening is sealed shut. The code prohibits booster fans as well, so the remedy for a weak, overlong run is a shorter route, not an added fan.
