Fauntleroy, King County
A gas fireplace asks for little, which is why it tends to get nothing. Then one November the pilot will not hold, or the glass has gone milky, or the flame lifts and sputters. A service visit in Fauntleroy costs $189 to $475 with us. The lower figure is a straightforward clean and test on a unit in working order; the higher one covers a neglected appliance that needs stripping down. Replacement parts, when needed, are quoted on top before we fit them.

Gas is common here. Census figures for the surrounding ZIP code area show about 42 percent of occupied homes relying on utility gas for their main heat, with electricity ahead at roughly half. That table says nothing about fireplaces, and we know of no count of gas hearths in Fauntleroy. What we see on calls is a mix: sealed direct-vent units in walls, log sets placed in older brick fireplaces, and inserts venting up through a chimney that once served a wood fire. Each of the three is serviced differently, so the first minutes of a visit go to identifying what you have.
Direct-vent fireplaces breathe through the wall or roof: one pipe brings outdoor air in, another carries exhaust out, and both end at a single cap outside. Where that cap faces matters in Fauntleroy. The peninsula's western shore is the one Wikipedia calls exposed to high winds and tides, and the Western Regional Climate Center says the wind in the Puget Sound lowlands comes mostly from the south and southwest during the wet months.
A cap on a west or south wall therefore sits in the wind for much of the heating season. Gusts can disturb the balance between intake and exhaust and blow a pilot out, which owners describe as a fireplace that quits on stormy nights only. The fix is seldom inside the firebox. We look at the termination: is it the cap the manufacturer specifies, is its wind guard present, has anything been planted or built in front of it since installation.
Every gas fireplace service we do in Fauntleroy includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowMost faults are dirt. Dust and pet hair settle on the pilot assembly over summer and weaken the small flame that proves to the gas valve that it is safe to open. Spiders nest in burner ports. A white film bakes onto the inside of the glass. Less often the cause is mechanical: a worn thermopile, a tired gasket, a vent cap knocked askew outdoors. We do not work on the gas line upstream of the appliance valve; that piping belongs to a gas fitter.
The rating plate tells us maker, model and how the unit vents; from then on its own manual governs the service.
Glass off, logs out, then the pilot assembly, burner and firebox floor are brushed and vacuumed.
We follow the vent to where it leaves the house and look at the termination from outside.
Everything goes back as the manufacturer shows it, the unit runs for several minutes, and we record flame pattern and carbon monoxide at the room.
HistoryLink gives the earthquake of April 29, 1965 a magnitude of 6.5 and about 45 seconds of shaking, beginning at 8:29 in the morning. FEMA's later advisory on damaged masonry chimneys treats a metal flue, or an insert, as a sounder path than rebuilding old brick like for like. Many gas inserts in older houses are, in effect, that advice carried out: a new appliance and a slim metal vent threaded up a masonry stack nobody wanted to rebuild.
The arrangement works as long as the vent is continuous and sealed top and bottom. The surrounding chimney still matters, though. If its upper courses are loose, the plate that holds the vent at the top is fixed to something that can move. During a gas service on such an insert we check that plate and the flashing around it, and we tell you if the brick it sits on needs attention of its own.

Fauntleroy is a cove neighborhood in the southwest corner of Seattle that began as a summer colony in 1904, on Fauntleroy Cove, with permanent homes that go back to 1907 and hillsides that filled in after World War II. We work every part of it — Endolyne included.

No. The regional Clean Air Agency aims its burn bans at wood: fireplaces, stoves, inserts and, once Stage 2 is reached, pellet stoves too. Gas appears nowhere in them.
Not any. A factory-built fireplace may take an unvented gas log heater only if its listing says so; otherwise Seattle's mechanical code forbids the pairing. So the label inside your firebox gets read first, advice second.
Possibly. That flue is worth filming: $99 plus tax per chimney, and if repairs we quote are approved, $99 is removed from their price.
