Trees are part of Fauntleroy's story. A Southwest Seattle Historical Society account recalls loggers felling a fir about nine feet across near the lane to the school, one of the last old-growth trees in those woods. The woods did not disappear: Fauntleroy Park keeps 28 acres around the creek's headwaters, and Seattle's windstorm analysis counts West Seattle among the most heavily forested parts of the city. For a chimney that means litter. Needles, cones and small branches land on roofs every autumn, and an uncapped flue collects its share.
Why did the first American settlers leave this side of the peninsula in 1851? Wikipedia's West Seattle entry gives the reason as high winds and tides on its exposed western shore. The city's own windstorm analysis adds that most wind damage in West Seattle comes from falling trees, the area being among the most wooded in Seattle.
Both facts bear on a cap in Fauntleroy. Wind tests the fastening, so we do not rely on a friction fit: screws bite the flue tile, or anchors go down through the crown. Trees supply the debris, so the screen has to be open enough to keep drawing when a few needles lie on it. Seattle's code puts numbers on that mesh, which must stop a half-inch sphere and pass one of three-eighths.

Thin painted steel rusts through at the corners. Or there was never a cap, and the first sign is a damp smell at the hearth after a week of rain. Whichever it is, the remedy is the same: the right size, the right metal, and a mounting that suits the flue it sits on.
Every flue opening is measured and the crown around it examined, because new metal on a fractured crown works loose.

The 1949 earthquake, magnitude 7.1, struck in mid-April and kept the ground moving for about thirty seconds. By HistoryLink's count, masons had roughly 10,000 chimneys to mend in western Washington once it stopped. EERI, writing about the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, observed the same pattern in older unreinforced masonry: brick shed from the highest parts, parapets and chimneys.

If those courses move under hand pressure, or the crown is split, we stop and show you before fixing new metal to them. A cap is a small purchase; it should not be bolted to masonry that is waiting for the next tremor to come apart.

Its residential code describes them. The open area of a spark arrestor, when a flue has one, must equal the flue outlet four times over, and the screen has to lift off for cleaning. Under a rain cap the code wants that same clearance. Our caps are sized accordingly.
