Fauntleroy, King County
Lint that slips past the dryer's own filter does not vanish. It lines the duct behind the machine, a little more with each load, until damp air can no longer get out. Clothes take two cycles, the laundry room turns humid, and the dryer runs hot. Cleaning the whole run in Fauntleroy costs $105 to $295. Short ducts ending at ground level are the cheap end. Roof outlets, second-story hoods and nests add time and price.

A good share of Fauntleroy's housing predates the clothes dryer as a household fixture. In the Census ZIP code area around the neighborhood, half the housing units were built before 1960, and almost two thirds are detached houses. When a dryer arrived in such a house, somebody found a path for its duct afterward: through a crawl space, across a basement ceiling, up through a closet. We do not know your house until we see it, but we are rarely surprised by a long, winding run in a home of that age.
The only moving part of a dryer vent is the light flap at its outlet. It opens when the dryer blows and falls shut when it stops, keeping cold air and animals out. On Fauntleroy's side of West Seattle that flap has an opponent. Wikipedia's article on the peninsula recalls that the western shore was judged too exposed, on account of high winds and tides, for the city the first settlers had in mind. UpCodes' text of the state residential code, for its part, requires the outlet to carry a backdraft damper.
Wind pressing on a west-facing hood can hold a tired flap shut against a weak airflow, or rattle a loose one until its hinge wears through. Either way lint settles just inside the outlet, the one place a homeowner cannot see. So on houses that look toward the water we give the hood more attention than the brochure version of this job would: hinge, spring if there is one, and whether the flap closes fully when the dryer is off.
Every dryer vent cleaning we do in Fauntleroy includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowWashington's residential code gives the yardstick. Section M1502 sets 35 feet as the ceiling for the duct, and every quarter-turn elbow eats 5 feet of that allowance. The pipe must be smooth-walled metal, four inches across. Behind the machine, the flexible transition piece is capped at 8 feet, and the code rules out booster fans altogether. A retrofit duct with four or five turns can exceed the limit while looking perfectly ordinary. We count the elbows and tell you the result.
With the dryer running we take an airflow reading at the outside hood, which turns the improvement into a figure you can compare.
From one end a rod-driven brush spins its way along the duct; at the other a vacuum is pulling.
The connector behind the machine and the hood outside are cleared by hand, and a crushed foil connector is pointed out.
Second reading, same spot. You get both figures along with what we saw of the duct's route.

Fauntleroy is a cove neighborhood in the southwest corner of Seattle that began as a summer colony in 1904, on Fauntleroy Cove, with permanent homes that go back to 1907 and hillsides that filled in after World War II. We work every part of it — Endolyne included.

No. The state code wants a backdraft damper at the outlet and specifically no screen, because a screen catches lint and blocks the duct from the outside in.
For most households, yearly. Long runs, big families and pets shorten that.
That fee belongs to chimney inspections, $99 plus tax per chimney. A dryer vent cleaning is quoted and billed by itself.
